Topic: OSHU Safety Climate Presentation
Dr. Huang’s research aims to improve the quality of individual well-being, and to build safe workplaces that enhance the safety and health of workers and their families. Dr. Huang has taken an interdisciplinary approach in exploring different ways of maximizing organizational productivity, especially safety performance and optimizing the potential to pursue healthier and safer work lives.
Safety climate refers to the workers’ shared perceptions of the organization’s policies, procedures, and practices as they relate to the value, importance, and actual priority of safety within the organization. The most important component of safety climate is management commitment to safety. The practical and theoretical significance of safety climate as a construct derives from its ability to predict safety behavior and safety-related outcomes in a wide variety of settings, and across cultures. Dr. Dov Zohar was one of the first scholars to introduce the concept of safety climate in 1980 as a way to describe employees’ perceptions of the value and role of safety within their organizations.
In this presentation, Dr. Huang will discuss several safety climate research and consulting projects and collaborations with safety climate experts such as Dr. Zohar, and the valid and reliable scales she has developed over her career. Additionally, she and her colleague, Anna Kelly, will discuss their lab’s current applied industry collaborations and the lab’s ongoing and developing research projects.
Dr. Emily (Yueng-hsiang) Huang is an Associate Professor at Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences at OHSU. She received her Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology/Systems Science from Portland State University. During her more than 20 years as an occupational safety and health researcher and consultant, she has published over 80 peer reviewed journal articles, 6 book chapters, more than 100 worldwide conference presentations/proceedings and has provided recommendations to numerous occupational safety and health practitioners. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP). Dr. Huang will continue studying and finding solutions to improve occupational safety and health. She plans to bring in the holistic view/systems approach to the study of what is next after conducting organizational climate surveys and to develop and validate various organizational climate and culture and other safety and health interventions.
Anna Kelly is the Project Coordinator for Dr. Emily Huang’s Safety Climate Lab in the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences. She holds degrees from the University of Oregon and Portland State University in Art and Psychology. Her professional experience includes executive and operations coordination in international arts, non-profit, corporate, and academic settings.
