When and how did you begin your safety career?
My path into safety was not a traditional one. As an immigrant, a single mother, and a lifelong learner, I spent many years balancing work, school, family, and volunteer commitments while continuing my education and trying to build a better future for my family. Along the way, I discovered Environmental Health and Safety, a field that combines my favorite topics: science, problem-solving, service, and leadership. What attracted me most was the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives while also protecting the environment.
I realized that safety professionals often work behind the scenes, but the impact of our work reaches everyone. Today, I bring a unique blend of technical expertise, genuine passion, and a deep sense of responsibility to my work to protect people, safeguard the environment, and strengthen organizational resilience. Looking back, I can honestly say that choosing a career in Environmental Health & Safety was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
What do you do now in Occupational Safety & Health and what do you like most?
I work at the EHS Department of Oregon Health & Science University, where I oversee environmental compliance, asbestos and lead management, monitoring activities, and assist with occupational health and safety, emergency preparedness, and sustainability initiatives. My job is to help ensure that our facilities comply with environmental regulations, but I see my role as something much greater; I help support my organization’s missions: teaching, healing, and discovery.
I often tell the people I work with that my mission is to support their mission, and I truly mean it. Whether I am working with researchers, project managers, maintenance staff, faculty, or leadership, my goal is to help them accomplish important work safely and in an environmentally conscious manner. What I enjoy most is knowing that my work contributes to a much larger purpose. Every day, when I see healthcare professionals saving lives, researchers advancing science, educators sharing knowledge, and staff keeping operations running smoothly, it reminds me how incredibly rewarding it is to be part of this remarkable community and to help them safely continue their work.
Tell us a bit about your experience as a student member of ASSP.
My experience as a student member of ASSP has been one of the most valuable parts of my professional development. Ever since I started my EHS studies, I have been looking for opportunities to connect academic learning with real-world practice, and ASSP helped bridge that gap. Through chapter meetings, professional development events, and conversations with experienced practitioners, I gained practical knowledge, mentorship, and friendships that have had a lasting impact on my career. One thing that stands out to me about the safety profession is how willing people are to share their knowledge and support others, and ASSP has been an important part of that experience.
What drew you to the Student Liaison role with the chapter and what do you enjoy most about it?
Being a Student Liaison within my chapter gave me an opportunity to utilize my skills and experience, give back to the profession, and support EHS students, just like I was not so long ago. I know firsthand how important professional connections can be, especially for students who may be new to the field or uncertain about their career path. I wanted to help create those connections and encourage students to become involved in the profession early in their careers.
What I enjoy most is sharing my experiences with students, helping them discover opportunities, build confidence, and connect with professionals who can inspire and guide them. It is exciting to watch them realize that they belong in this profession and that their voices and contributions matter. It is especially rewarding to see their growth and accomplishments, and to watch them take the first steps toward successful careers in the versatile field of EHS.
What motivates you as a safety professional?
What motivates me most is service. I believe that safety is fundamentally about caring for people. Regulations, permits, inspections, and policies are important, but at the end of the day, our work is about helping people go home safely, protecting communities, and preserving the environment for future generations and for our children.
I am also motivated by learning. I have always been curious, and I consider myself a lifelong learner. That curiosity is one of the reasons I keep learning and educating myself. Every new challenge is an opportunity to grow, gain new perspectives, and become more effective at protecting others and the environment.
Most importantly, I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute to something larger than myself. When I see the positive impact that dedicated professionals can have on people and communities, it reminds me why this work matters and gives me the drive to continue learning, leading, and contributing.
What do you like to do in your free time?
My free time is usually centered around family, community, learning, and service. My favorite activity is spending time with my two sons, whether it’s a friendly tennis game, cheering on my younger son’s basketball team, having deep discussions about life’s big questions, or hiking on Mt. Hood. I also enjoy reading, attending Zumba and yoga classes, and spending time outdoors. I serve in leadership roles within the Hungarian community and my church, both of which are very important parts of my life.
Beyond family and community, learning has always been one of the greatest passions in my life. I am naturally curious and enjoy discovering new ideas, whether they come from science, history, leadership, or simply from the people I meet. I believe education and personal growth are lifelong journey that give purpose to our lives. If what I learn helps me become a better mother, better serve my community, or make a positive difference in someone’s life, then I feel that time was well spent.world.
