March Membership Meeting 2024
March 14, 2024
11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Topic: Occupational and Social Safety for People with Disabilities
Occupational safety for people with disabilities is a critical aspect of ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in the workplace. Employers have a moral and legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for all employees, including those with disabilities. One key aspect of occupational safety for people with disabilities involves conducting thorough risk assessments tailored to meet their needs. This includes identifying potential hazards related to mobility, sensory impairments, or other limitations and implementing appropriate measures to eliminate or minimize these risks. Moreover, comprehensive training programs are essential to educate both employees and employers on safety protocols and procedures specific to individuals with disabilities. By fostering a culture of inclusion and prioritizing the safety of all employees, organizations can create an environment where individuals with disabilities can thrive professionally while minimizing the risk of workplace injuries or accidents.
Speaker: Ian Jaquiss, JD
Ian Jaquiss has a near-lifetime of living with a physical disability from a spinal cord injury. After a car hit him when he was two, Ian has had to learn how to navigate a world not built for people who use wheels to get around. Through those experiences, Ian has gained a lived expertise on creating inclusive and welcoming cultures, in both work and social settings, for all people but especially people with disabilities.
Ian currently works for a non-profit with a mission to help people with disabilities find meaningful work. He also worked in fields including healthcare, professional sports, amateur sports, and journalism. The common thread for all his careers has been issues related to disability: access, equity, justice, and opportunity.
Ian has a degree in English Literature from USC, where he became the first person with a traumatic spinal cord injury to swim for an NCAA university. He represented the United States at the 1984 and 1988 Paralympic Games, winning four medals, including two golds at the Seoul games in 1988. Ian earned his law degree at Cumberland School of Law in 1995. Ian and his family live in Southeast Portland.
