Speaker 1: Leigh Manning & Wendy Boughton – Menopause: Let’s Talk About It

For years, menopause has been a taboo subject, often leaving those going through this significant life change to suffer in silence. This session will explore menopause’s physiological and psychological impacts. It will also offer advice for how employers can support workers experiencing menopause as well as suggestions for how individuals can manage its effects. Ultimately empowering, this session will provide resources for attendees that will help them navigate this life change with confidence.

About the Speakers:

Leigh Manning, MPH, CSP, ARM has been Senior Safety Management Consultant with SAIF Corporation since 2010 and has been working in occupational health and safety for more than 20 years. In her current role, she creates safety and health training materials, including those focused on personal health. She is an active member of the Cascade Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals, serving in many leadership roles over the years, including as the ChapterWISE representative. Leigh has a BA from the University of Oregon in Journalism, Public Relations and Communications and a Master of Public Health from Portland State University. She spends her free time hiking and kayaking and watching the Oregon Ducks.

Wendy Boughton is SAIF’s Specialty Safety Management Consultant, specializing in healthcare. Prior to joining SAIF, she accumulated nearly 30 years of healthcare experience across rehabilitation, employee health and wellness, occupational health, and healthcare administration. Wendy is a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist (COHN-S) with bachelor’s degrees in both Nursing and Kinesiology. She is passionate about helping healthcare organizations improve workplace safety, employee well-being, and injury prevention efforts. Outside of work, Wendy enjoys spending time with family and friends, relaxing at the Oregon coast, and exploring the state’s scenic hiking trails.

Speaker 2: Kim Gamble – Energy Based Safety, The Energy Wheel, and Stuff That Kills You (STKY): applications to better identify and control hazards

The non-fatal injury rate amongst construction workers declined 41.2% between the years 2008 and 2023, while the fatality rate only declined 2.0%. This recognition resulted in research and studies to identify and understand the reasons behind this stagnating saving of lives. What this research has uncovered is complex, yet at the same time simple – what causes fatal injuries is vastly different from the causes of non-fatal injuries. So, what are, and how do we consistently identify, these key differences to make change and save lives.

This presentation will provide an overview of Energy Based Safety, consensus on what is and is not a Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF), and how to use the energy wheel and STKY icons to help our front line improve their hazard recognition abilities, while providing safety leaders with a reliable framework that can help organizations set safety priorities. We will revisit the hierarchy of controls and look at an updated model based on Energy Based Safety and discuss standardized safety metrics beyond the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR).

During the presentation we will discuss and review research and recommendations from the Construction Safety Research Alliance and Energy Based Safety: A Scientific Approach to Preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities recently published by Matthew Hallowell. While much of the research was construction centric, the topic is not construction centered and any industry with the potential for high-energy incidents can benefit.

About the Speaker: 

Kim Gamble, CHST ASP, Sr. Safety Consultant at GEW has 30 years’ experience in safety and health, serving as a corporate safety and health director for a large commercial general contractor for 26 of those years. In her current role as a safety and health consultant she helps organizations build, improve or repair their safety and health program and is currently working with OHSU’s Institute of Occupational Health Sciences in its development of respectful workplace program for the construction industry.
